Modulation of GABA Pathways: Studies suggest that natural substances like California poppy, lavender oil, passionflower, and zizyphus influence the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) pathways. GABA serves as a calming neurotransmitter, and its enhanced activity is associated with increased sleepiness and relaxation.

Both lavender oil and zizyphus have been shown to mitigate the neuroexcitatory effects of glutamate. By decreasing glutamate’s wake-promoting actions, these substances may contribute to a more restful state.

Zizyphus: Widely used for its sedative properties.

Lavender Oil: In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study of 212 individuals, lavender oil supplementation (80mg/day) was associated with significant improvements in sleep quality (p=0.002).

California Poppy: In vitro research indicates that California poppy extract may have peripheral analgesic effects, potentially aiding those who experience sleep disturbances due to mild pain. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that California poppy may prolong sleep duration, offering a more sustained rest period.

Passionflower: The benefits of passionflower to improve sleep quality were demonstrated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, repeated measure trial. Forty-one participants aged between 18 to 35 years were randomised to receive either passionflower tea (each tea bag contained 2g passionflower) or placebo. Sleep quality was found to be significantly better by 22 days in the passionflower cohort relative to placebo (p<0.01), suggesting that consumption of even low dose passionflower tea yields sleep benefits in adults who experience sleep disturbances.

 

Directions

Adults:
For mild anxiety: Take 1 tablet twice daily with food.
For sleeplessness: Take 2 tablets once daily with your evening meal. Or take as directed by your healthcare professional.
